Studying mainly castles within travelling distance of Carlisle, this course looks at the development of castles to see how they evolved over the 500 years and how castle builders tried to resolve the conflict between comfort in daily life and the need to defend against occasional attacks. Each session will be liberally demonstrated with photographs, maps, diagrams and reconstructions. Course materials will be made available week by week on the internet.
